Awards for 2017

    • "National Champions" of the 2017  IFTSA College Bowl Competition at the IFT Annual Meeting & Expo in Las Vegas, NV, June 25-25 2017. Team members Xiaoqing Tan, Vijay Varma Indukuri, Jaye Aster Broder, Venkata Charepalli, and Lisa Caprera (team captain).
    • "Grand Prize" finish in the Disney/Institute of Food Technologist’s Student Association (IFTSA) Product Development  Competition,  held at the 2017 IFT Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV.  Product name, Snow White’s Apple Delights. Team consisted of Aura Zhao, Ben Chrisfield, Laurel Vernarelli, Weslie Khoo, and Mitch Culler.
    • 1st Place in the National Dairy Council New Product Development Competition held during the 2017 American Dairy Science Association Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, June 25-28, 2017. Product name, FüZen. Team consisted of Lisa Caprera, Manpreet Cheema, Mitchell Culler, Jacob Ginn, Devin Koenig, Abigail Peleschak, Taylor Thomas, Michelle Tran (team captain), Gloria Wang, Michael Zaffuto.
    • “Honorable Mention” in the 27th Annual IFT Student Association & MARS Product Development Competition held during the 2017 IFT Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, June25-28, 2017. Product Name, Cado Cakes. Nationally 17 teams entered the competition. Team members Peter DeMartino, Gaby Garzon, Kaley Hoefferle (team captain), Christine Kosciewicz, Anirudh Mylavarapu, Kaleigh Raia, Jessica Raskin, Ashley Walters, and graduate student Yu Zhao.
    • 3rd place, 3rd Annual Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. Student product Development Competition. Product name,  CranPop. Team consisted of  Weslie Khoo, Anna Sliwinski, Haoshu Zhang, Michelle Reyes, and Qiaoqiao Dai.
    • Allison Brown, 2017 IFT Sensory and Consumer Sciences Division Ph.D. Scholarship. IFT 2017.
    • Mitch Culler, 1st place, 2017 IFT Dairy Division Graduate Research Competition, IFT 2017.
    • Dr. Luke LaBorde promoted to the rank of Professor of Food Science effective July 1, 2017.
    • Juliana Fritts, 2nd Place poster in Life Science Symposium, 2nd Annual Penn State Life Sciences Symposium sponsored by the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences.
    • Weslie Khoo, Haoshu Zhang and Lauriel Stewart,  Grand prize $7500 in the 2017 Ag Sprinboard Competition, April 13, for their product Pasta 2050.
    • Stephen J. Knabel, 2017 Gamma Sigma Delta Research Award.
    • Michelle Reyes, 3rd place finish in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division of the 32nd Annual Graduate School Exhibition. "Influence of Consumer Attitudes of Sweeteners on Intended Intake of Flavored Milk in Adolescent Women."
    • Cody Stubbs, 1st Place, Gamma Sigma Delta Research Expo, Undergraduate Human-related Division.
    • Thomas Pastor, 2nd Place, Gamma Sigma Delta Research Expo, Undergraduate Human-related Division.
    • Natalie Keller, 3rd Place, Gamma Sigma Delta Research Expo, Undergraduate Human-related Division.
    • Ellie (Xiaoqing) Tan, Jennifer (Yue) Huang, and Shu-Wei Huang, 95th National Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest. Team Awards -1st in Yogurt, 3rd in Butter, 3rd in Ice Cream, 3rd in Cottage, Cheese, and 4th in All Products. Individual Awards: Ellie Tan-2nd in Cottage Cheese, 3rd in Yogurt, 3rd in Butter, 4th in All Products; Jennifer Huang - 2nd in Yogurt, 5th in Cheddar, 6th in All Products.
